What is it and why it’s important

Ever thought about swimming with sharks, no cage? Or climbing a mountain when you've only got a 60% chance of making it back down? Virgin Galactic, and Madison Mountaineering are reaching out to those who seek death to experience the thrill of survival - with no guarantee of success.

This thirst for the extreme is leading to a boom in the industry: the value of adventure tourism is rising steeply, from 324.9 billion dollars to an expected 2 trillion dollars in 2032. Hotspots such as the Chernobyl exclusion zone, the icy expanses of Antarctica, the stratospheric heights of Everest and now even the cosmos are attracting the potential target audience.

However, the impact of extreme tourism goes beyond personal success. It's a boon to local economies in Nepal, South Africa, and India and is run with a clear conscience, with 'poorism' tours reinvesting in the communities they visit.

The market for extreme tourism, aimed at people with money and courage, continues to develop. Now even war-torn regions are becoming destinations offering raw, unfiltered experiences. This isn't just a journey, but a quest for change — both within and between societies.
