Is Google's reign as the king of search coming to an end? It’s possible.

In fact, with Gen Z, it's becoming a reality. 74% of Gen Z uses TikTok search in some way or another, and a whopping 40% of Gen Z ‌prefers TikTok and Instagram search for their daily dose of information, not Google. That number is even higher for Gen Z women, with 51% using TikTok for search over Google.

Back in 2022, even Google’s Senior Vice President, Prabhakar Raghavan, acknowledged TikTok as a rising contender against Google.

To be blunt, TikTok is powerful. Numerous countries have banned it. Trending topics driven by hashtags found via search, like the infamous feta pasta recipe of a few years ago (#uunifetapasta), have even caused nationwide shortages of ingredients!

And the hashtag #tiktokmademebuy has racked up over 8 billion views (and caused countless products to completely sell out).

But apart from recipes, beauty hacks, and products, one of the biggest trends internally on the TikTok platform in December 2023 was TikTok SEO, with a five-year search growth of over 4,500%.

Why all the hype? Why is Gen Z flocking to social platforms instead of Google? It’s simple, really. These platforms have something traditional search just can’t quite match yet – the allure of video format, ultra-personalised content and a sense of relatability.
